2. What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device by your browser at the request of a website. Cookies allow a website to recognise a user's device on return visits, retain certain preferences, and collect information about how the Site is used. Similar technologies covered by this policy include local storage, pixel tags and tracking scripts embedded in emails.
3. Specific cookies used
| Cookie name / type | Category | Purpose | Retention period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session identifier cookie | Necessary | Maintains session state while a user completes and submits the contact form | Duration of browser session |
| Consent preference cookie | Necessary | Records the user's cookie consent choices so the banner is not repeated on each visit | 12 months |
| Analytics cookie(s) | Analytics | Aggregates anonymised or pseudonymised statistics on Site traffic and page performance | Up to 24 months |
| Email engagement pixel | Marketing | Recorded when a recipient opens or clicks a link within an email subscription sent by Bravesta, to measure open and click-through rates | Up to 24 months |
4. How cookies relate to the contact form and email subscription
When a visitor completes the contact form on the Site, a necessary session cookie is used to preserve the entered data during submission and to protect against duplicate or fraudulent submissions. No analytics or marketing cookie is required to process a contact form submission.
When a visitor subscribes to Bravesta's email updates, a marketing-category tracking pixel may subsequently be included in the emails sent, allowing Bravesta to measure whether the email was opened and which links were clicked. This tracking is only activated where the visitor has separately consented to receive the email subscription and, where applicable, to marketing cookies.
5. Legal basis for use of cookies
| Category | Legal basis under POPIA |
|---|---|
| Necessary | Legitimate interest of Bravesta in operating a functional and secure website (section 11(1)(f) POPIA) |
| Analytics | Consent of the data subject (section 11(1)(a) POPIA), obtained via the cookie banner |
| Marketing | Consent of the data subject (section 11(1)(a) POPIA), obtained via the cookie banner and/or the email subscription opt-in |
6. Managing and withdrawing consent
On first visiting the Site, users are presented with a cookie banner allowing acceptance or rejection of analytics and marketing cookies. Necessary cookies cannot be rejected without impairing Site functionality. Consent choices may be changed at any time by:
- Adjusting preferences through the cookie consent tool accessible on the Site;
- Deleting cookies already stored via browser settings; and
- Configuring the browser to block cookies generally, noting that this may affect Site functionality.
Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out prior to withdrawal.
7. Third-party cookies
Where analytics or email delivery services are provided by third-party processors engaged by Bravesta, those providers may place cookies on your device in the course of delivering their service. Such processors act on Bravesta's instructions and are contractually restricted from using the collected information for their own purposes.
8. Cross-border storage
Cookie and analytics data may be stored on servers located outside South Africa. Where this occurs, Bravesta ensures that the receiving party is subject to a law, binding corporate rules or agreement that provides an adequate level of protection substantially similar to POPIA, as required by section 72 of POPIA.
9. Data subject rights
To the extent cookie data is linked to identifiable personal information, data subjects retain the rights described in Bravesta's Privacy Policy, including the right to access, correct, or request deletion of such information, and to object to processing based on legitimate interest or consent.
